LGBT (or LGBTQ+) is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, serving as an umbrella term for diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, with the “+” representing other identities like Intersex, Asexual, Pansexual, etc., signifying people not straight or cisgender. It covers a spectrum of attraction and identity, encompassing those attracted to the same sex (Lesbian, Gay), more than one sex (Bisexual), those whose gender differs from birth assignment (Transgender), and those exploring or identifying outside traditional norms (Queer/Questioning).
Here’s a breakdown of the letters:

      • L (Lesbian): A woman attracted to other women.
      • G (Gay): A person attracted to people of the same sex (often used for men attracted to men).
      • B (Bisexual): Attraction to more than one gender.
      • T (Transgender): A person whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth.
      • Q (Queer/Questioning): “Queer” is a broad, reclaimed term for non-heterosexual/cisgender identities; “Questioning” refers to exploring one’s identity.
      • + (Plus): Represents other identities like Intersex (I), Asexual (A), Pansexual, Genderfluid, Two-Spirit, etc., acknowledging the vast diversity within the community.

Essentially, the acronym identifies people who are part of sexual and gender minorities, beyond heterosexual (attracted to the opposite sex) and cisgender (identifying with the sex assigned at birth).
